Style tip: writing the date

Get the date right.

And if you want to get it right, just follow Commonwealth style – not US conventions, not formats from Uzbekistan.

In Australia, the date follows a specific formula: date month year:

9 December 2010

This is the format you should use in general documents. The convention in the United States is month date year:

December 9 2010

If you need to include the weekday, put it before the date and without punctuation:

Thursday 9 December 2010

ALSO did you know? The Internationally defined standard (ISO 8601) is all numbers, from year to date, separated by dashes. So 16 August 1958 would be:

1958-08-16 or 19580816
